Have you ever felt like your stomach is empty, even though you already eat a
while ago? Or maybe you feel like you're perpetually hungry all the time? This
is of course a piece of bad news if you're trying to lose some weight. And the
bigger problem is how the diet itself makes it feels so much worse.
Some of your habits might be the reason why your stomach letting out a
thunderous growl all the time. The reason is, there are few hormones in play
related to hunger. One of the hormones that trigger hunger is
"Ghrelin", and the ones that keep down the hunger are "Leptin"
and "Peptide YY".
These hormones are affected by several factors in your diet, habit, and
lifestyle. Some may cause ghrelin to increase and decrease the leptin and
peptide YY. Some other factors also increase your blood sugars or a stress
hormone called "Cortisol", which of course might cause hunger.
Why You Are Always Hungry
-
Not Enough Sleep
Sleep too little triggers the body to produce extra ghrelin, the hunger trigger hormone, and doesn't produce enough leptin, the one that suppresses your appetite. There's also a study that indicates that people who sleep less than 6 hours a day have a greater possibility of being obese. So make sure you get enough sleep, aim for 7-9 hours to keep yourself healthy.
-
Not Enough Nutrients
A balance of protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats is an important piece in the feeling of fullness. Do not afraid to combine these three types of food because lack of one type can affect your hunger level. Just make sure to consume the food from a healthy source.
-
Eat Too Little
Do you love skipping meals such as breakfast, for example? It might be the reason why you are always hungry. You can try to modify your method by dividing your daily calorie intakes into 5-6 meals per day or with 2-3 hours intervals. This helps you boost your metabolism and change the need of consuming a certain amount of food to feel full. -
Too Much Sugar and Carbs
Another reason why you are always feeling hungry is that you eat a lot of sugar or white carbs throughout the day. The effect is quite awful because not only it causes a blood spike, which the reason why you get hungry, but also makes you crave more sugar and white carbs.
- Skipping Cardio Training
Some studies have shown that cardio training is related to appetite. The study mentioned that this type of exercise decreases ghrelin level and increases peptide YY level. Not only that, but it also helps with regulating blood sugar levels, therefore reduce your food craving. - Overwhelmed by Stress
Believe it or not, stress can also increase the amount of ghrelin and cortisol, which is the fight or flight hormone. If your life is stressful, you might want to do something about it. Easier said than done, but you can do it! Improve your diet, exercise, get enough sleep, talk with your beloved one. These activities might help you with your stress problem. - Medical Issue
This one is a rare case. There might be a problem with your body system that causes you constant hunger. If other reasons don't get you anywhere, you might want to consult a doctor.
