Should I Try Ketogenic Diets?

First of all, let's see the meaning of Ketosis. Ketosis is a metabolic process, when body doesn't have enough glucose, it burns stored fat as alternative fuel for energy. This process results in a build up acids called ketones. As you can see, the target of this diet is to burn that stored fat in hope of weight loss.

#What is Ketogenic Diet?
Ketogenic Diet, also known as Keto Diet and Low Carb Diet is a high fat diet, with around 75% calories derived from fats. This diet can lead to short term weight loss. There's even a study found that obese men following a ketogenic diet for about 4 weeks lost an average of 6kg during this time.

#Is It Allright To Practice Keto diet?
The diet may improve levels of HDL Cholesterol, which is a 'good' cholesterol. But, the health benefits could be due to the weight loss and healthier foods, rather than reduction in carbs. Some experts recommend this diet for individuals with type 2 diabetes, because the body still produces some insulin but unable to properly user the insulin to transport glucose into cells as fuel.

The diet will focuses on the reduction of dietary carbs intake, because individuals with type 2 diabetes are recommended to reduce carbs intake as carbs are converted to glucose and increase blood sugar levels.

Different with type 2, people with type 1 diabetes are more likely to develop ketoacidosis, which happen as ketone levels are abnormally high, making the acidity of the blood also increases. This is a serious condition that can prove fatal, emergency medical treatment is required to avoid or treat diabetic coma.

In conclusion, individuals with diabetes who follow a ketogenic diet need to carefully monitor their ketone levels. Although it is most prevalent in individuals with type 1 diabetes, people with type 2 diabetes can also develop ketoacidosis.
