Is Mental Health Important?

 

Mental Health

    Yes! It is important. It is crucial, and necessary. But why it is so important for you, for all of us? First, let's get to know what Mental Health is. Mental Health affects how we think, feel and act as we cope with life. It includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being.

    Mental Health helps us determine how we handle stress, and even make choices. For example, if you experience mental health problems, you might have difficulty in making a decision because the way you think, mood, and behavior all could be affected.

    There are many aspects that can affect your mental health, such as:

  • Biological Factor - Genes, or Brain Chemistry
  • Life Experience - Trauma
  • Family History with Mental Health Problem
  • Lifestyle - Substance Use, Excessive Diet, etc 

     How do we know that we might have a mental health problem? If it's related to emotions, it can be hard to know what's normal, and what's not. However, we can see few signs of the problem:

  • Withdrawing from People, or Activities You Love
  • Drastic Change in Sleeping or Eating
  • Feeling Helpless or Hopeless
  • Thinking of Harming Yourself or even Others
  • Feeling Like Nothing Matters
  • Unusually Confused, Forgetful, Angry, Upset, Worried, or Scared
  • Experiencing Severe Mood Swing
  • Not Being Able to do Daily Task

     Now, what can we do to improve our Mental Health, in case we think we may have mental health problem? The best answer is of course to get help from Professionals. They may give you therapy and or medicine to help you deal with this problem. You can also try these practices to help you maintain and get a better emotional well-being:

  • Social Interaction
    1. At this pandemic situation, unfortunately it is not possible to meet your friends directly for safety reason. But thanks to technology, this is not a big deal. Call your friends, get into Video Call, preferably someone that's a good listener
    2. Join a networking, or special interest group. Community with similar interest could be fun and definitely a good help
  • Get Active
    1. Exercise releases powerful chemical that lift your mood and provide energy. It can help you relieve stress, and even get a better sleep

  • Get Enough Quality Sleep
    1. Calm your mind, try taking a warm bath and listening to soothe music before you go to sleep
    2. Set up the bedroom. Get a dark, cool and quiet room

  • Manage Your Stress Level
    1. Relaxation practice, such as yoga or meditation might help reduce your stress level
    2. Do your favorite activities, anything that makes you feel good. Watch movie, listen to music, draw painting, read a book, even play a video game
