Superfetation - Pregnant While Already Pregnant

On an extremely rare occasion, a second pregnancy could occur during an initial pregnancy in a human. This happens because another ovum get fertilized by sperm and implanted days or even weeks later than the first. Babies born from the case of Superfetation are considered to be twins, because they may be born during the same birth on the same day.

The chances of having this special case is really low, even almost impossible, because you need three requirements, which are:

  • Ovulation during an ongoing pregnancy
  • Fertilization by sperm cell on the second ovum
  • The fertilized egg get implanted in an already pregnant womb

Will the babies born completely healthy from this case? Yes, it is very possible. However, there's a risk of  younger baby being born prematurely because when one baby is ready to be born, the other fetus might not ready and has a higher chance of having medical problem, such as:

  • Low Birth Weight
  • Breathing Trouble
  • Feeding Difficulties
  • Brain Hemorrhage
