What is Obesity? In simple words, obesity is a disease because of excessive body fat. People can be considered obese when their Body Mass Index (BMI) is over 25-30 kg/m².

BMI itself is a measurement from dividing a person's weight by the square of the person's height. Obesity is dangerous, because it increases the risks of other health problem. The most common ones are cardiovascular, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Obesity Causes
When you take more calories than burn it through daily activities or exercise, the body stores the excessive calories as fat. There's also other factors, such as genetic, medical reasons, or metabolic, but of course the most common causes of obesity is sedentary lifestyle combined with unhealthy diet.

In this modern era, we don't do physically demanding work as we used to do. Technology and increased media exposure such as television, gave us an easy life. Therefore, the declines in physical activity happened. 

As for unhealthy diet, junk food and liquid calories are the biggest reason. They have tons of empty calories. Usually one meal has enough calories for standard daily intake, but because of the poor nutrition, you don't feel full.

Obesity Treatment

  • Do NOT go into extreme diet to lose weight, aim for 0.5-1 kg/week with -500 calories a day.
  • Exercise and increase physical activity, even a simple walking.
  • Weight Loss Surgery - the problem might return if you don't change your lifestyle.
